Impromptu Guitar Licks to The Fixx - Made For The Future

Haven't posted anything for a while - so while doing a practice session last night - just flipped on the webcam and this was the result.  Just some fun with extrapolation on different riffs based on the 1980's The Fixx - Made For The Future. 

Rotational Rampage

Now it seems that our world is in a very provocative and precarious state at present, needless to say.  And with the knowledge that we are all sailing through space at a speed of 19,000 mph, while suspended on a spherical globe which is spinning, gyrating and tilting simultaneously, while at the same time being bombarded by solar winds of gamma, beta and theta waves - not to mention the fact that we only know about approximately 5% of the matter in the universe.  I felt it fitting to just post a video which just gives a sense of the need to just hold on and enjoy the ride, because it might be a wild and unpredictable ride, but when all is said and done,  we've made the best of it and grabbed hold and taken life for a ride nonetheless.  For some reason, that's the feel I have with this little guit-diddly I call Rotational Rampage.

During my college years at the University of Utah, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a course which was basically an excursion through the color country of Southern Utah.  There were actually two classes which broke into two separate trips, a full blown camping field trip through each of the state and national parks in the southern portion of Utah.  Although, at the time I was somewhat familiar with the geology and region, I had never fully experienced the magnificence of color country. 
It's easy to scratch the surface of scenery by just looking at pictures and possibly visiting the area, but until you actually embark on an expedition and really explore the vast unknown of some of these regions, you'll never have or grasp a full appreciation of the grandeur which awaits your well spent energy to explore. 
So, it was with that recollection of memories that I stumbled upon this time lapse film of Delicate Arch that I was motivated to create somewhat of a new age Musical Mindscape creation of guitar licks which I tried to recapture the wonder and awe I felt while exploring these amazing formations of mother nature, aka God.

This was just an experiment of trying to adapt to the spacial aspect of instruments and flow of the music.  As you can hear, I've had a bit of Hendrix, and Pink Floyd influence over the years.  Hope you enjoy!

Using Dual Recording to Avoid Clipping

The dual recording feature can record two WAV files - one at normal level, one much lower - so you always have a backupin case your main recording distorts. Here's how to set that up: - Press and hold the DUAL button, under the STOP button. - Turn the DATA WHEEL to select "Mode". - Press the »| button to access the right column. - Turn the wheel again until the display says "Dual". - Press |« to select the left column again, turn the wheel to select "Level" and press the »| button. - Use the wheel to select how much lower the second recording should be, from -6dB to -12dB. - Press the STOP/HOME button then press RECORD. The bottom left corner should say something like "Dual -12".

Better Live Recordings with Dual Inputs

Another advantage to the dual recording feature is recording two sets of inputs. For live recording, you can record your set using the built-in mics as well as a direct "board mix" from the front-of-house mixer to the line inputs. To set this up: - Press and hold the DUAL button, under the STOP button. - Turn the DATA WHEEL to select "Mode", Press the »| button to access the right column. - There are two options, Mix and Line. Use "Mix" to combine the two sources inside the DR-2d for one stereo file. Use "Line" to create two stereo files on the DR-2d that you can mix together later using your DAW software. - Adjust the "Level" setting to set the second recording level (in "Line") or the blend between mic and line inputs (in "Mix.")

Using Variable Speed Audition to Learn Music

TASCAM portable recorders allow you to loop and slow down music to learn new licks or transcribe parts. Here is how you set that up: - Play a WAV or MP3 file. - Press the I/O button at the start and end point of where you want to loop the section. The music will automatically loop. - Press the PB CONT button to switch that function on. - Press and hold the PB CONT button to access its menu. There are four settings that affect playback here: - VSA - When on, the music will not change pitch when you slow it down. - Speed - Changes playback between 1/2 speed and 2x rate - Key - Changes the pitch of playback in 1/2 step intervals - Fine Tune - Use this to match the playback to your instrument's pitch without re-tuning - Press the STOP/HOME button to go to the main screen.
